Grooming
Proper grooming is essential for the health and well-being of your beloved bunny. Here are some important tips on rabbit grooming, including nail trims, and scent gland cleaning:
Nail Trims: Regular nail trims are crucial to prevent overgrowth, discomfort, and potential injuries. Use nail clippers (like these) specifically designed for small animals and have baby powder on hand in case of any accidental bleeding. Take care to trim only the tips of the nails, avoiding the quick (the pink part inside the nail). If you're unsure or uncomfortable doing it yourself, bring your bunny into our storefront any time during open hours.
Scent Gland Cleaning: Rabbits have scent glands located near their tails. Occasionally, these glands may produce excess oils or become impacted, leading to discomfort or odor. To clean the scent glands, gently wipe the area with a warm, damp cloth, or unscented baby wipe. Then gently open the glands and push any excess “gunk” out with a Q-Tip. If you do not feel confident doing this yourself, bring your bunny to our storefront anytime during open hours.
Brushing: Depending on your rabbit's coat type, regular brushing may be necessary to remove loose fur and prevent matting. Use a soft brush or a grooming glove to gently comb through their fur, paying attention to areas prone to tangling or matting. Long-haired rabbits may require more frequent brushing compared to short-haired breeds. If you need help grooming your bunny, check out our ‘Services’ tab. Rex bunnies cannot be brushed, as it will ruin the plushness of their fur. Instead, pull the tufts of fur out gently as they become loose.
Eye and Ear Cleaning: Keep an eye out for any discharge, crust, or redness around your rabbit's eyes or ears. Use a clean, damp cloth to gently wipe away any debris. Avoid using cotton swabs or harsh solutions, as these can harm your rabbit's delicate ears and eyes. If you notice persistent issues or significant discomfort, consult a veterinarian.
Check for Parasites: Regularly inspect your rabbit's fur for signs of fleas, mites, or ticks. If you notice any parasites or signs of infestation, consult an exotic veterinarian for appropriate treatment options. Keep your rabbits indoors to minimize these issues.
Remember, grooming sessions are also an excellent opportunity for bonding and strengthening your relationship with your bunny. Approach grooming with patience, gentleness, and positive reinforcement, offering treats or praise to reward their cooperation.
