No Open Adoptions

What are open adoptions and why don’t we do them?

That’s a question we received recently. It’s genuinely a good question, so something we’ve been sitting on for a couple of days.

Open adoption is a new phrase that some places are using.

It means that you can go in and adopt same day, usually within 30 minutes of arriving at the shelter or rescue.

This is an issue for us. There is no background checking, no vetting references, no ensuring the adopter has proper education or supplies, nothing.

It’s a great way to move animals quickly but places little regard on where they go or to what kind of person they wind up with.

When we get people asking if we do open adoptions, our answer will be an emphatic no. Bunnies, and really any animal, should not be a spur of the moment decision. You need a proper setup and education before welcoming one into your family for the next 8-12 years!

Also, it’s worth note that based on our research, rarely do places with open adoption take their animals back, as they fill the spots so quickly that there often is not room.

We understand some places have reasons for using this model and it might work for them, but we won’t be using it ourselves and above is a little bit of “why.” It’s not realistic for bunnies.

We believe it should be quality over quantity. After all, if you’re not doing the best you can for all the animals in your care, then what’s the point?
